Hunting great places to eat in Lisbon

Hunting great places to eat in Lisbon

I confess that the title of the article is a bit misleading. We don’t go hunting for great places to eat in Lisbon, especially these days (with two little members of the family) and also because we are quite dedicated to cooking at home. However, we do keep an eye on what’s in trend and what like minded bloggers recommend and update our list of favorite places to eat in Lisbon.

Costa Vicentina on an Indian summer

Costa Vicentina on an Indian summer

Summer in Portugal starts late and ends late, in autumn. Summer here gets to enjoy the autumn’s golden light. It’s what we know as Indian summer.

We always reserve some weekends at this time of the year to go to the beach and soak up the last warm sunrays.

Cacela Velha, a dreamy little village in Algarve, Portugal

Cacela Velha, a dreamy little village in Algarve, Portugal

When I think about the art of slow living, a little village by the sea, with a beach down the cliff and a tiny whitewashed church come to mind. Friendly dogs strolling the narrow cobblestone streets and the smell of grilled fish in the air are also part of the picture.

Wind down in the Botanical Garden of Principe Real

Wind down in the Botanical Garden of Principe Real

With 1300 plant species, the Botanical Garden mirrors the history of the Portuguese colonization in its plants from Africa, Brazil and Asia.

The writer, Thomas Mann, also fell in love with the garden: “Your first visit in Lisbon must be to the Botanical Garden on the western heights. There is nothing like it in all Europe, thanks to a climate in which a tropical flora flourishes side by side with that of the temperate zone. The gardens are crowded with araucaria, bamboo, papyrus, yucca and every kind of palm tree. That’s more than short-winded cultural history. That is geological time, it is the antiquity of the earth in its entirety.” Continue reading

Prado restaurant in Lisbon, where the light, greenery and food coexist

Prado restaurant in Lisbon, where the light, greenery and food coexist

When we entered the restaurant there was nobody and  we became hesitant whether it’s one of those pretentious places… Then again, we forgot we are parents and now we lunch and dine earlier than the ordinary human. Not long after we sat at the table and ordered, the place filled in steadily. Continue reading

Tropical, oriental, blissful: about our love affair with the Monserrate Park

Tropical, oriental, blissful: about our love affair with the Monserrate Park

For weekend escapes, some have the Alps, others have the Carpathian Mountains and Lisboners have the Sintra Park. With a microclimate and the possibility to trek through its gardens, Sintra is the promise of mountainous fresh air. What got us hooked one of these past weekends was the Monserrate Park. Truth is, it took me quite some time (7 years) to finally visit it. I wish we could just secretly camp here one day ;). Continue reading
