Sibiu, Romania. The City where the houses don’t sleep

Sibiu deserves its place in the top 5 most beautiful cities to visit in Romania.

Known for its German heritage, Sibiu is also named Hermannstadt and was chosen European Cultural Capital in 2007. A city in the heart of Transylvania (raise your hand if Dracula just sprung to your mind), surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, with breathtaking landscapes, amazing mountain resorts, natural richness, all of which will turn your staying in Romania into a want-to-go-back memory.

The medieval magic of Sibiu will quickly magnetize you with its historic centre, the two main squares (Piața Mare and Piața Mică), Gothic buildings, narrow streets, various coffee shops, to mention but a few. If you feel romantic, there’s a special place to prove your love: The Bridge of Lies. Careful though! If you will declare something that is not truthful, the bridge will collapse…Now you may guess where the name comes from.

It won’t take you more than an hour to make a tour around the Upper and Lower towns, the main local attractions. As a big city lover, you may quickly lose your excitement. Or the opposite, you may finally take a deep breath of air and slow down your life pace. And well, if you are among the ones who embrace the coziness and calmness of small cities, you may want to live and grow a family here (in 2008, Forbes declared Sibiu as Europe’s 8th most idyllic place to live). Have a look at the pictures bellow to see what idyllic may look like.

What makes us flirting with the city and promise to come back again are the houses with their poetic charm. They say that just by catching their eyes with the long, unblinking gaze, your romantic self will be caught inside the house for forever. To rephrase one of Nietzsche’s quotes, “And if you gaze for long into a house, the house gazes also into you”. But let’s not make it sound too far-fetched!

The genuine and curious thing about the houses in Sibiu is that they really do have eyes and they never sleep. You can see regular houses with two eyes, but you can also meet fantastic houses with three, four or even five eyes. S I B I U T I F U L! Everywhere you go there’s a house staring outside, probably with a home blinking inside…

We are in love with this inspiring place and with the picturesque Transylvania that surrounds it, and hope that  everyone visiting Romania will have a chance to drop by.
